Hard Times

Hard times, these,

hiding from the world we live in.

We’re turning our backs on

the suffering of millions,

closing our eyes in an unfair world

to the great injustices of First World living,

washing our hands of the endless stream

deaf to the cries of the poor and needy.

This is the dulling down and the

closing-up that happens when

with open eyes we see too much,

so we close our minds to watch it.

A rolling global ball of news

assaults our tired senses,

'til one small man or woman

feels powerless to stop it.

--------------------------

And so, we watch it roll from bad to worse,

while we stay safe and cut off

in the warm caves of our lovely lives,

dodging death when it comes too close

while this unstoppable predictability

rolls on around the outside world.

It’s crushing our humanity! Surely you see.

Things have got so bad, there’s bound to be

an outbreak of caring.

Surely now the day has come,

with the determination of caring millions,

to stand up! Stand up! Stand up!

and turn this world around.

---------------------------

Nobody ever said this was going to be easy.

The final straw that broke its back is never going to happen.

All we can do is stand up now, one-by-one-by-one-by-one!

And remember that we are not alone, we’re in this thing together!
